Episode 1: MY ASSESSMENT LIST

         Name:           Camille Frances M. Luis

       Course:         Bachelor of Secondary Education

Resource Teacher:         Mrs. Eliza De Leon

Cooperating School:       Isabela National High School

MY TARGET:

At the end of the activity, you will be competent in identifying and naming different assessment methods used in the classroom.

MY TASK:
  • Observe at least three classes and make a list of the assessment methods used by teachers.
  • In my list, classified assessment methods as to authenticity and conventional and alternative.
  •  Describe how each assessment method was used, including my personal observations.
  •  Confer with my FS teacher for the assessment list.
  •  Reflect on my assessment.

MY TOOLS:

As you visit schools and observe assessment practices in at least three classes, document your observations using the activity forms provided for you in this reference. For your pen-and-paper test items, customize a table of specifications, and prepare the test material based on the prescriptions of the school where you do class observation.

CLASS 1 OBSERVATION
Name of the School Observed:  Isabela National High School
School Address:  Claravall St., San Vicente, Ilagan, Isabela
Visited Date:  December 11, 2014
Grade / Year Level:  Fourth Year
Subject Area:  Mathematics

ASSESSMENT TOOLS

DESCRIPTION

Oral Questioning

Performance Test (Board work)

  • The teacher asks questions in relation to the topic which is all about the Unit Circle.
  • The class was enthralled and was definitely participating with the activity because of the way the teacher executes the method of assessment.
  • Students were able to consolidate their mathematical thinking and understanding and the teacher provides supplementation after the question has been answered.

  • After the discussion, the teacher conducted the activity. She gave problems to be solved by the students on the black board. It aims to assess student understanding by illustrating the unit circle; labeling its angles and showing its solution.

CLASS 2 OBSERVATION
Name of the School Observed:  Isabela National High School
School Address:  Claravall St., San Vicente, Ilagan, Isabela
Visited Date:  December 11, 2014
Grade / Year Level:  Grade 8
Subject Area:  Mathematics

ASSESSMENT TOOLS

DESCRIPTION

Pen-and-Paper Test (Quiz)

  • It is the most common used method of assessment.
  • The teacher gave a 25-item quiz related to their past lessons about perpendicularity and parallelism to assess the students' knowledge and skills in problem analysis.
  • The students participated and were all identifying and solving the problems independently.

CLASS 3 OBSERVATION
Name of the School Observed:  Isabela National High School
School Address:  Claravall St., San Vicente, Ilagan, Isabela
Visited Date:  December 11, 2014
Grade / Year Level:  Grade 7
Subject Area:  Mathematics

ASSESSMENT TOOLS

DESCRIPTION

Oral Recitation

Paper-and-Pencil Test (Seat work)

  • The students were asked questions regarding their past lessons about finding the common monomial factor to see if they understood the lesson well.
  • The teacher discussed another lesson which is about finding the Greatest Common Factor (GCF). After the discussion, the teacher gave a seat work.
  • The seat work as necessary to assess their understanding about the topic.

Oral Questioning

Performance Test (Board work)

Paper-and-Pencil Test
        -             Seat work; Quiz

  • The students were asked questions during the discussion of the topic to assess their understanding and to see how well they explain their answers to questions being asked.
  • The teacher encouraged the students to recite and she then provides the needed supplementation regarding the topic. Students were chosen randomly. Every answer was given a corresponding point.
  • The teacher held an activity in which the students could apply their knowledge about the topic and skills in illustration and problem solving in front of the class. Instead of calling the names of those who volunteered, she draws from a list of their names and let them solve the problem on the board.
  • The teacher held pen-and-paper assessment to assess their skills and ability in solving mathematical problems.
  • They were given test items which they have to solve given the allotted time. She moves around to ensure that nobody is cheating.

ANALYSIS

1.    Was there a variety of assessment methods used by the teacher? How relevant was / were the assessment method / s used?

Yes, there was a variety of assessment methods used by the teacher - oral questioning, performance test, paper-and-pencil test, etc. Assessment tools are used to measure the students' knowledge and skills. Using varied tools in assessing the teacher helps the students to have comparative data that provides valuable information on how well the students are meeting the learning outcomes.

2.   Do you think the expected students' learning behaviors indicated in the objectives were properly and appropriately assessed through those assessment methods?

The expected students' learning behaviors indicated in the objectives were properly and appropriately assessed through those assessment methods. It was said to be effective because the instructional objectives has been attained. The students were able to understand the lesson, perform the given tasks and demonstrate their mathematical skills in analyzing problems.

REFLECTION

Assessment tools check the understanding of students. It is the process of gathering and organizing quantitative or qualitative data into an interpretable form to have a basis for judgment or decision-making through traditional assessment (paper-and-pencil test); alternative assessment (performance tests, projects, portfolios, journals, etc.); Authentic assessment (test that reflect real-life situations or experiences).

The teacher should use a variety of assessment tools in in assessing the students' helps the teacher to have comparative data that provides valuable information on how well the students are meeting the learning outcomes. Classroom assessments should be clear, valid and reliable, and should provide opportunity to all students to demonstrate achievement.

Based on what I have observed, the teachers 'methods of assessing the students' knowledge and skills were effective. The students were able to meet the learning objectives and to perform the given tasks set by the teacher.
